The Soviet system of forced-labour camps in which prisoners were confined and made to work.
Revise: Stalin the DictatorThe Gulag was the Soviet forced-labour camp system. Sending prisoners to camps removed alleged opponents from society while providing labour for the state. Execution and imprisonment were therefore both instruments of political control, although they had different consequences for their victims.
