Nixon Doctrine

The Nixon Doctrine, announced in 1969, set out a wider approach to supporting American allies. The USA would continue to provide assistance and protection against nuclear threats, but allies were expected to supply the main manpower for their own conventional defence. In Vietnam, this meant shifting the burden of ground fighting from American troops to the South Vietnamese army, the ARVN.
