Revise: Impact of the Second World WarIn August 1939, Stalin had signed the Nazi–Soviet Pact, under which Germany and the USSR agreed not to attack one another. Stalin hoped this would buy time to prepare Soviet defences. However, Hitler broke the agreement by launching Operation Barbarossa on 22 June 1941.
