Navigation Acts

Definition

Laws regulating shipping and colonial trade to favour English merchants, ships and national power.

Paper 2

The first Navigation Act was passed in 1651, before the Restoration. After Charles II returned to the throne in 1660, Parliament renewed and extended these restrictions. The Acts were therefore a continuation and strengthening of an existing policy, not an entirely new invention by Charles.
