Revise: Tactics and StrategyFrom the mid-seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, infantry commonly used linear tactics. Battalions of about 500–1,000 men could change between line, column and square. Each arrangement solved a different problem, so officers needed to judge terrain, distance and the enemy's actions.
