In 1900, trade unionists and socialist organisations established the Labour Representation Committee, following a Trades Union Congress initiative. Ramsay MacDonald became its secretary. It aimed to support working-class candidates and create a distinct Labour group in Parliament, while allowing cooperation with parties promoting workers' interests.
