The Domestic Violence and Matrimonial Proceedings Act 1976 enabled victims to seek protection through injunctions. In 1991, rape within marriage was recognised as a criminal offence: marriage did not give a husband the right to force his wife to have sex. Changes in protection and recognition could also encourage reporting, bringing previously hidden abuse into recorded figures.
