Revise: Nature and Changing Definitions of Criminal ActivityFraud still involved deception, but criminals could now conceal their identities online and send scams to thousands of potential victims, including people in other countries. Extortion still involved threats, but criminals could threaten to expose personal information obtained online unless a victim paid them.

Deliberate deception used to obtain money or another benefit.
Revise: Changes in crimeThe extent of crime concerns how much offending occurs. Its nature concerns the kinds of offences committed: for example, theft, violence or fraud.
Distinguish a new crime from a new way of committing an old crime: online fraud changes the method and scale, but deception for financial gain is not new.
Show continuity as well as change. Online fraud uses new technology, but deception for financial gain is an older form of crime.
When comparing crime figures, check the geographical area, population and offences covered. Adding fraud to a survey total does not mean that those offences suddenly began occurring.
