Revise: Expansion and warfareThe Aztecs believed that sacrificial blood nourished Huitzilopochtli, their god of the sun and war, and helped sustain the sun. Capturing enemy warriors therefore had a religious purpose as well as a military one. They also believed that warriors killed in battle accompanied the sun on its journey.
