Human immunodeficiency virus: a virus that damages the immune system and can lead to AIDS.

Revise: Responses to diseaseIn 1983, researchers identified HIV as its cause. HIV is the virus; AIDS is the condition that can develop after HIV has seriously damaged the immune system. Having HIV does not mean that someone already has AIDS.
Explain responses rather than just listing them: closing crowded venues reduced opportunities for influenza to spread; HIV information campaigns explained how people could avoid infection.
Distinguish HIV infection from AIDS. Do not claim that the information campaign alone explains infection levels or that it ended prejudice.
