Revise: Persian Invasions of Greece: 493–490 BCIn 491 BC, Darius sent heralds to Greek cities demanding submission, symbolised by an offering of earth and water. Many cities medised: they submitted to or supported Persia. This weakened the possibility of a united Greek response and allowed Darius to pursue his objectives without fighting every city.
