Guardianship

In 1926, the owners placed the site in the guardianship of the Ministry of Works as an ancient monument. Repairing walls, clearing vegetation and excavating the moats became part of its conservation. Major archaeological excavations led by Barry Cunliffe between 1961 and 1979 also made Portchester a place of historical investigation.
