Friar

In 1524, a group of twelve Franciscan friars arrived in Mexico, led by Martín de Valencia. Their central purpose was to preach the Gospel and encourage conversion. Their religious superior instructed them to teach through their behaviour as well as their words: an orderly life and good example were intended to make Christianity convincing.
