Revise: Developments 1960–62Sit-ins targeted segregated lunch counters; the Freedom Riders tested whether desegregation rulings were being obeyed on interstate bus journeys—journeys between states—and in bus terminals. Both methods made discrimination visible rather than allowing it to continue unchallenged.
Distinguish the aims of the Freedom Riders from their achievements. Testing desegregation rulings did not mean that all Southern facilities immediately became integrated.
Keep the protests distinct: Greensboro challenged segregated lunch counters in 1960; the Freedom Riders challenged segregation in interstate bus travel and terminal facilities in 1961.
