Federal Republic of Germany

The Federal Republic of Germany, or West Germany, was formed in May 1949. The German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, followed in October 1949. The crisis did not begin the disagreement over Germany, but it made a jointly governed future less likely and reinforced the move towards separate states.
