Revise: The Iron CurtainStalin established Comecon on 25 January 1949. Its role was economic rather than political. It offered an alternative to Marshall Aid and encouraged communist countries to trade with one another.

The Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, established in 1949 to coordinate the economies and trade of Soviet-bloc countries.
Revise: Development of the Cold WarComecon, established in 1949, coordinated the economies of Soviet-bloc countries and encouraged trade between them. It provided an alternative framework to the Western recovery programme and reinforced their economic dependence on the Soviet bloc.
Distinguish Cominform’s political role from Comecon’s economic role. The ‘econ’ in Comecon is a useful reminder.
Do not confuse Cominform, which coordinated communist parties, with Comecon, which coordinated Soviet-bloc economies.
