Paper 1
The Soviet closure of land and water supply routes into West Berlin from June 1948 to May 1949, intended to put pressure on the Western powers.
Revise: The Berlin Crises and Military AlliancesOn 24 June 1948, the USSR blocked road, rail and water routes into West Berlin. This was the Berlin Blockade. West Berlin depended on supplies from outside the city, so cutting these routes threatened its access to food and other essentials.
Do not confuse the Berlin Blockade of 1948–1949 with the Berlin Wall, built in 1961. Explain both why the airlift avoided immediate war and how the crisis deepened division.
