Paper 2
Revise: Legacy of EmpireExpulsion and fear of violence forced people to leave. Around 26,000 Ugandan Asians moved to Britain.
Paper 2
The compulsory removal of a group of people from a country by its authorities.
Revise: The Jewish Community in England (1066–1290)Edward justified expulsion by claiming that Jews had evaded his ban on interest-bearing loans and by presenting their removal as an act in honour of Christ. These were the king’s accusations and justification, not proof of collective wrongdoing.
Paper 1
Forcing people to leave a country or territory. Edward I ordered the expulsion of Jews from England in 1290.
Revise: Jewish communitiesIn 1290, Edward I ordered the expulsion of Jews from England, working with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Jewish people were required to convert to Christianity or leave. Established communities were uprooted: this was government-enforced migration, not a voluntary search for opportunities.
Use named evidence to explain significance: Claudia Jones’s newspaper promoted community identity, while Idi Amin’s expulsion forced people to leave Uganda.
Treat accusations against Jews and Edward I’s justification for expulsion as evidence of contemporary attitudes, not proof that the accusations were true.
Link causes of expulsion: religious and political pressure increased while taxation and persecution made Jewish communities poorer and less valuable to the Crown.
