Paper 3
Leaving one’s country to settle in another country.
Revise: Patterns of Emigration to the AmericasBetween c.1688 and c.1730, people left the British Isles to settle in the Americas. This movement was emigration from the perspective of the country they left, and immigration from the perspective of the country they entered. The Americas included both the North American mainland and the Caribbean islands, often called the West Indies.
Do not describe all Highland migration as overseas emigration: people also moved to coastal settlements, farms elsewhere in Scotland and cities such as Glasgow.
Distinguish emigration from movement within Britain. Moving from Whitechapel to another London neighbourhood was internal migration; travelling onwards to South Africa was emigration from Britain.
