Paper 3
Revise: African American experiencePresident Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation took effect on 1 January 1863. It declared enslaved people free in designated areas in rebellion against the United States. The Union’s struggle was now explicitly connected to emancipation, not only to restoring the country.
Distinguish the Emancipation Proclamation’s declaration of freedom from its enforcement: freedom in Confederate-controlled areas depended on Union military advances.
