Revise: The Nature of WarfareDragoons were mounted infantry, not simply another name for cavalry. Their horses carried them rapidly to useful positions, but they normally dismounted to fight with muskets or carbines, shorter firearms. They could guard a flank, cover an approach or support cavalry with gunfire.
