Revise: The First Secession and Early Plebeian Reforms (494-471 BC)Livy explains the practical importance of this change: patricians could influence the existing elections through their clients’ votes. Clients were people linked to powerful patrons by relationships of protection and support. A patrician could therefore influence the choice of a plebeian tribune without holding that office himself, by having clients support his preferred candidate.
