If they believe that offenders can change, they may support rehabilitation through education, training and help with personal problems. These purposes can exist together: a society does not have to choose only one.

Studying change over time means asking what became different, and what remained. Changes in the castle's role help explain alterations to its buildings, but the focus here is on its physical development: its layout, appearance and surviving fabric.
