Cape of Good Hope

In 1488, the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz, also known as Bartolomeu Dias, rounded the southern end of Africa and reached the waters beyond the Cape of Good Hope. Although this was before Columbus’s first Atlantic voyage, it was an important foundation for exploration during 1492–1522.
