Black market

Food available on the black market was expensive, pushing up the real cost of living further. For workers, the war increasingly meant long hours, reduced purchasing power and difficulty obtaining food.

Most Americans complied, treating these adjustments as part of their contribution to victory. However, some bought and sold rationed goods illegally on the black market. This shows that public support for the war did not mean universal acceptance of every restriction.
