Revise: Royal Dockyards, Chatham, 1567 to 1984Armour plating introduced another demand. HMS Aetna incorporated armour in its design in 1856, and Chatham went on to build the iron-hulled HMS Achilles. Metal hulls and protective plates required different tools and facilities from those used for wooden sailing ships.
