Farmers selectively bred crops and animals with higher yields. Fertilisers supplied mineral nutrients for plant growth, pesticides controlled pests and herbicides reduced competition from weeds. Improved irrigation, including groundwater pumping and electric sprinklers, supplied water when rainfall was insufficient.
