Revise: Geological Variations in the UKSedimentary rocks form from sediment that accumulates in layers, often on the floor of a sea or lake. As more material builds up, the lower layers are compacted. Minerals can also bind the grains together: this is called cementation.

Rock formed when deposited sediment becomes compacted into solid rock over time.
Do not describe all sedimentary rocks as soft or permeable. Carboniferous limestone is fairly hard, while clay is very soft and impermeable.

Sedimentary rocks form as layers of sediment accumulate and become compacted into solid rock over time. Sediment can include mud or the remains of marine organisms. Although they belong to the same group, chalk, Carboniferous limestone and clay behave differently.
