Revise: Geological Variations in the UKPast plate collisions compressed the crust, causing rocks to fold and uplift. Mountain building helped establish upland regions such as the Scottish Highlands, North Wales and the Lake District. Heat and pressure during tectonic activity also changed existing rocks into metamorphic rocks such as slate and schist.
