Protected wilderness area

A protected wilderness area aims to preserve a large, largely undisturbed environment and its natural processes. Restrictions can be strong: in designated wilderness areas in the USA, motorised vehicles, logging and road building are banned. A national park also conserves the environment, but its authorities may need to accommodate recreation and the interests of local communities.
