Net energy importer

The UK was a net energy importer during the 1970s but became a net exporter in 1981: it exported more energy than it imported. This was not a smooth transition. Output fell in the late 1980s following the Piper Alpha disaster, before the UK regained net-exporter status in the mid-1990s.
