Revise: Coastal Physical ProcessesWater enters cracks and joints in the rock. When temperatures fall below freezing, the water freezes and expands, putting pressure on the sides of the cracks. It thaws when temperatures rise.
Paper 2
A fracture in rock without displacement of the rock on either side.
When explaining geological structure, include weaknesses such as joints and faults as well as the direction of rock bands.

A joint is a fracture without displacement; a fault is a fracture along which rock has moved. Both provide weaknesses that expose rock to erosion and weathering. Weathering breaks down rock in place, whereas erosion also removes material.
