Near the Equator, the trade winds meet in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), also called the tropical rain belt. Warm, moist air rises, cools and condenses, forming clouds and heavy rain. The belt shifts towards the region receiving the strongest solar heating: generally northwards during Northern Hemisphere summer and southwards during Southern Hemisphere summer.
