Revise: Desertification: Causes and ManagementRemoval of fuel wood: cutting trees and shrubs for cooking or heating removes protective vegetation. There are fewer roots to hold the soil together and less shade to reduce drying. Fewer fallen leaves also mean less organic matter and fewer nutrients returning to the soil.
