Forest clearance can support economic development. Logging, mining, farming and hydroelectric projects provide jobs, while sales of timber, minerals and agricultural products generate income. In Malaysia, hardwoods and palm oil provide clear examples of goods produced for export.

Economic development involves more than producing and earning more: it can improve people's access to education, healthcare and paid work. Globalisation connects an economy to overseas customers, businesses and investment. In India, investment by transnational corporations (TNCs) has helped expand manufacturing and services, creating employment and opportunities to learn new skills.
