Specification 1.3 · Component 3
Revise: Processing and Presenting EvidenceOne consistent approach is Harvard referencing: a short author–year citation beside the information links to a full reference in a bibliography. For example, Peter Schwartzstein's article Death of the Nile, published on 10 October 2017, can be cited as (Schwartzstein, 2017). This identifies the source; it does not by itself demonstrate that a claim is correct.

Reference secondary maps, photographs and datasets as well as written text. Paraphrasing still needs a citation.

A short acknowledgement identifying the source of information, placed alongside the information used.
Put a short citation beside a graph, map or table using secondary information, identifying the organisation or author and year, such as ‘Source: Office for National Statistics, 2023’. Use the actual source and date for your dataset. If you redraw or process information, make clear that it is adapted from that source.
