The reference period against which a change, such as temperature increase or sea-level rise, is measured.

Revise: Impacts and Future Projections of Climate ChangeTemperature change must be measured against a baseline. Many international projections use the average temperature of 1850–1900 as their reference. A projected increase of 2°C above that baseline would mean a warmer global average, not an average global temperature of 2°C.
When using a projection graph, give the year, scenario, value and unit. Check the baseline: a temperature change is not an absolute temperature.
