Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel, USA, 1956) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, USA, 1982) both bring aliens into recognisable Californian communities. Their central difference is not simply that one alien is frightening and the other is friendly. Each film uses an encounter with an alien to explore what makes people human, whom they can trust and how they should respond to difference.
