Linear narrative

E.T. has a mainly linear narrative: the alien is left behind, Elliott finds him, the children shelter him, government intervention creates a crisis, and the children help him reach his departing spacecraft. Its opening withholds information to create mystery, but the audience subsequently follows the relationship as it develops.
