Cold War

The film was released in 1956, during the Cold War. Following the Second World War, rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union made communism a powerful source of anxiety in American public life. Fear concerned not only an attack from abroad but also the possibility that apparently ordinary Americans might secretly serve an opposing ideology.
