Paper 1
A comedy centred on lovers overcoming obstacles and misunderstandings, usually reaching a happy resolution.
Revise: Love and marriageThe play belongs to the tradition of romantic comedy, in which lovers overcome obstacles and move towards a happy ending. Shakespeare complicates that pattern: the same society that encourages marriage also makes it dangerous, especially for a woman whose reputation is questioned. Marriage resolves the plots, but the audience can still ask whether the relationships have become secure.
