Component 1
A broad historical label used for North African people, especially Muslims, and also more loosely for other dark-skinned people. Its use in Shakespeare’s England does not correspond neatly to a modern nationality or racial category.
Revise: Context“Moor” was a broad and shifting label. It could refer to North African Muslims, but English writers also used it more loosely for other dark-skinned people. Othello is presented as Black, although the term alone does not assign him a precise modern ethnic identity.
