Paper 1
Revise: Book One, Chapters 14 to 17: the exodus from LondonThe Thunder Child, an ironclad torpedo ram, charges to defend the refugees. The brother sees it as “a vast iron bulk like the blade of a plough tearing through the water”, as the narrator reports in Book One Chapter 17. The simile makes the warship's movement forceful and purposeful: human machinery briefly becomes an effective answer to Martian machinery.
