Revise: The ÉmigréeEach stanza ends with “sunlight”. This epistrophe provides a recurring point of stability despite the changing images and increasing hostility. Political violence, censorship and personal intimidation each fail to displace the speaker’s final emphasis on light.

Bassanio begins consecutive lines with “If you did know”: this is anaphora, making his defence sound insistent as he asks Portia to consider his reasons. He also repeatedly ends lines with “the ring”: this is epistrophe, keeping the disputed object at the centre of his argument. Portia answers with the same repeated line ending, but turns attention from his reasons to the ring’s meaning and his promise.
