The play has a double plot: Claudio and Hero move quickly towards marriage, while Beatrice and Benedick apparently resist love. Both relationships are redirected by what people hear and believe. Friends invent stories to bring Beatrice and Benedick together; Don John and Borachio manufacture evidence to separate Claudio and Hero.
