Revise: Athelney JonesIn Chapter 12, Jones calls Holmes “a connoisseur of crime”. The expression recognises Holmes’s specialist knowledge, but Jones follows it by insisting on duty and taking Small away. Their roles remain distinct: Holmes understands the case in depth; Jones exercises official custody.

The next line declares, “your friends become wine connoisseurs, not drunks.” (line 14). A connoisseur has expert knowledge, so the term makes drinking sound sophisticated. Yet “drunks” recalls the “drunken tourist types” condemned earlier.
