Paper 1
A novel or play that uses wit and social situations to expose the manners, pretensions and values of a particular society.
Revise: Writer's methodsThe novel is also a comedy of manners: its humour exposes the rules and pretensions of a society concerned with wealth, family connections and respectable marriage. Published in 1813, it presents women of small fortune whose financial security may depend heavily on marriage. This makes apparently comic conversations about husbands serious as well as entertaining.
