Revise: BenedickHis conclusion is the emphatic ‘I will live a bachelor’. Bachelorhood protects the independent identity he performs before his friends. His jokes can be read as emotional armour: if he dismisses love first, he need not risk rejection or betrayal.

He explains away his bachelor oath with “the world must be peopled”. His personal change becomes an apparent duty to humanity: people must have children. This grand justification protects his pride and reflects the social expectation that adults should marry.

Revise: BenedickBenedick is a soldier from Padua who arrives in Messina with Don Pedro and Claudio after a successful military campaign. He entertains his companions by mocking love and marriage, and presents himself as a bachelor who cannot be persuaded to change. Shakespeare gradually exposes the insecurity beneath this confident performance.
