At the Meryton assembly, Bingley is sociable, dances enthusiastically and asks Jane to dance twice. Darcy dances only with women from his own party and refuses further introductions. Their contrasting behaviour makes Bingley a foil to Darcy: Bingley’s openness highlights Darcy’s reserve and disdain.
