Unit cost

Machinery, printing plates and cutting dies have high setup costs. These are easier to justify when the same design will be produced in large quantities: the initial cost is spread across many boxes, reducing the unit cost. Automation also improves repeatability and reduces errors caused by inconsistent manual work.
